The Broad Chare bills itself as a proper pub specialising in proper food and proper beer. That being the case, you should be in for a proper treat upon crossing the threshold of the bustling Newcastle boozer. It’s a pub that’s big on warmth, low on fuss: stripped wood floors, high bar stools, painted brickwork and comfy leather banquettes are the decor du jour. Sup your pint beside the polished-oak bar or tuck yourself away in the Snug behind the frosted glass partition. In here, you can hear yourself talk, concentrate on the crossword or nod off quietly in the corner. Upstairs in the Dining Room, it’s all reassuringly simple with solid wood tables, sturdy schoolroom chairs and shiny brass coat-hooks. The Broad Chare’s menus offer honest, home-cooked food just like pubs used to serve: tasty, satisfying and proudly British. You can enjoy a proper sit-down-at-the-table meal or, if you’re more in the mood for grazing while nursing your pint or are pushed for time, try the Bar Snacks menu. These are bar snacks with attitude: generous, full of flavour, deliberately tempting – hand-raised pork pies, Scotch eggs, cauliflower fritters – they’re almost a meal in themselves. Eat upstairs or down, on your own or with friends, one course or four. It’s your pub and your call.

Nice food even if slightly on the pricier side. The quality is certainly there! Sells good beer too. Reservations definitely recommended.
